The EMI Formula for Car Loan

EMI = P × R × (1+R)^N ÷ [(1+R)^N - 1]

Where:
P = Car Loan Principal (amount borrowed)
R = Monthly Interest Rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
N = Number of Monthly Installments (tenure in months)

Worked Example:
Loan: ₹8,00,000 | Rate: 9% p.a. | Tenure: 5 years (60 months)
Monthly Rate (R) = 9/12/100 = 0.0075
EMI = 8,00,000 × 0.0075 × (1.0075)^60 / [(1.0075)^60 - 1]
EMI = ₹16,607 per month

New Car vs Used Car Loan Interest Rates

New car loans typically have lower interest rates (8.5-12%) compared to used car loans (12-16%). Banks also offer longer tenures for new cars (up to 7 years) versus used cars (up to 5 years). The loan amount for used cars is usually limited to 80-90% of the car's valuation.

Tips to Get the Best Car Loan Deal

  • Compare multiple lenders: SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and other banks offer different rates.
  • Maintain good credit score: 750+ CIBIL score helps negotiate better rates.
  • Make a down payment: 15-20% down payment reduces EMI and gets better rates.
  • Choose shorter tenure: 3-5 years tenure has lower total interest than 7 years.
  • Consider dealer financing: Some dealerships offer special rates with manufacturer tie-ups.
  • Don't buy add-ons: Avoid unnecessary insurance and accessories financed through the loan.
